Ethylene Oxide (EtO) Safety at BD

A letter from Boone Brothers, Senior Manager, Environmental Health & Safety:

The story of BD is a nearly 125-year history of providing medical devices and technologies to doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratories and other healthcare workers to help them care for patients. For more than 50 years, it has also been a story about my colleagues right here in Covington and Madison who are among the brightest, most committed people with whom I’ve ever worked. Their dedication is part of our commitment to excellence at every point of manufacturing and distribution.

This commitment extends to the protection of human health and the environment. It’s why the company decided more than 20 years ago to voluntarily invest in and install the best available emissions process control technology, which other companies still have yet to do. In 2021, we completed construction in Covington and Madison on an innovative new system to capture even the trace level of emissions from the warehouse portion of our sterilization facility. The combination creates two of the most sophisticated ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization facilities in the world that capture and destroy more than 99.9% of EtO used at the facility.

We have created this website to provide as much information as possible to help alleviate all of the confusion about the safe use of EtO. We know our facilities are safe – the science is clear. It also should be noted that BD is composed of people who live and work in these communities, and we wouldn’t operate a facility that isn’t safe. We wouldn’t be here every day if we didn’t have the latitude to do everything the right way from environmental protection and employee safety to producing the best medical devices in the world.

Thank you for your interest in the facts about BD, EtO and most recently our expansive role in the global fight against COVID-19. The products that are sterilized in Covington and Madison are integral to the treatment for those stricken by the virus. Boone Brothers
